My Concept Map

posted Saturday, 19 April 2008
I must say that I really enjoyed making the concept map.  Not only do I feel comfortable using Inspiration, but I liked the thought process I went through as I was determining what to include in the map.  I think concept maps are a fantastic resource for students.  They are useful in basically all subject areas and are an effective way for students to brainstorm and organize their ideas.  Now, I just have to figure out how to upload my concept map to my blog! Please click here to view my concept map.

Hey Jess, I really appreciate the way your concept map is structured into different "spheres" of priorities and goals... I think it speaks to the organizational qualities of your personality, and ... if it serves as any example of how you will use concept maps in your classroom, it's very easy to read and follow. I also really like that ... it's a personal map, driven by emotional and personal themes. I think that all teachers could benefit from having the introspection to come up with a similar concept map, or at least to take time to answer these types of probing questions. I honestly haven't taken time to think about "what motivates me" as an educator, and the fact that you were able to put it so cleanly into words is inspiring. Knowing what you want to get out of your field, how you want to be viewed (both by fellow educators and your students), and the professional goals you have yourself ... all of these things put you head and shoulders above other teachers simply by being able to articulate them in a comprehensive way. KUDOS!

Jessamyn - ideas of your that stood out to me that complimented your educational perspective were working in a variety of environments, being in an international school, and having your own tutoring business. From my own experiences in Taiwan and form peer teachers I have known internationally in projects, there are many opportunities worldwide for teacher who have a sense of adventure. You use the concept map well - imagine it in the classroom and using it to help students see an overview of a complicated concept - sometimes it's magic.

Terry, Thank you for your insight. It sounds like you have had many amazing experiences in the teaching world. As I am only just begining my teaching career, I look forward to many new adventures. I will certainly incorporate concept maps in my future teaching as I feel they are accessable to all kinds of learners.

Jess, you found a way to communicate a lot of ideas in a very concise and approachable way! The main thing that really stood out for me was how your whole concept map was focused around the earth and having a global view. I can't agree with that more! I really liked how you summarized important points in just a word or two. By including subcategories, it all made sense and was well representative of what it seems that you intended to portray.

I agree with all the posts that said that your concept map is clear, and concise. Your concept map is a great model of what concept map looks like. I could tell that you enjoyed completing this exercise because you had to opportunity to talk about yourself. What can be greater? I would consider using this map in your portfolio. Any person can look at this map, and understand your values, aspirations, and reasoning for choosing education. Greatness inspires greatness. I am inspired to create a better concept map.

Jess,

I really liked the way you presented your concept map. The structure was easy to read and made sense for what you were trying to convey. When reading your points it was obvious that you put lots of thought into it. It read as something that you were striving for instead of something that comes easily to you. I seemed very personal and genuine. Thank you.
