finally my first blog

posted Monday, 14 April 2008
Wow, what a relief to finally have access. I do not have much experience with computers at all and they kind of frustrate me!  In my classroom we have computers once a week for just 30 minutes.  I teach the class, but usually just walk the kids through math and language arts websites.  They seem to love it though and look forward to the time on the computers.  There is no curriculum at the school and I don;t make enough time to have interesting things for the kids to do on the computer.

Jessamyn - do you have the computers in your class or do you take the kids to a lab? At any rate, it sounds like you are in charge of the learning time while they are using computers. What math and language arts site do you use with the kids? What kind of goal do you have when the kids are working on websites, for example? What is your grade level and what is the socio-economic background of your kids?

We have two in the room, but the kids don;t use them, just the teacher. I have used a variety of sights but the ones I can remember off the top of my head are: kidspiration, rainforestmaths, and starfall. The goal is to enhance the students math and LA skills along with becoming familiar with the computer. I work in a first grade classroom at an affluent private school. Hope that helps

I would say that my class is some where between Level 1 and Level 2. As a student I have reached Level 4b. As an observer I have certainly seen people at Level 6 and as a teacher, I have really only ever gone up to the Level 2 or maybe Level 3.

Jess,

I have a similar experience with the use of technology at my school, but this is how it differs. At my school the students go to computer lab where the technology teacher assists them in using the computers, on a specific project created by the teachers on that grade level. There is minimal computer use in the classroom. The students look forward to that time.
